The Algarve in January: 8 Reasons to Visit this January [2025]

Today, I’m sharing a secret of mine; the Algarve in January. Most people picture the Algarve as a summer destination, with its golden beaches and bright sunshine, but I’ve come to love January.

The Algarve in January offers a unique charm that’s often overlooked. After exploring Portugal for five years, I’ve come to love the quieter, cooler, but just as enticing Algarve in winter. Want to find out why you should visit the Algarve this January for your next trip?

Mild Weather and Sunshine

One of the biggest perks of the Algarve in January? The weather. While the rest of Europe shivers, the Algarve enjoys mild temperatures, often around 15-18°C (59-64°F). It’s perfect for enjoying outdoor activities without the intense heat of summer.

The Algarve has a Mediterranean climate, which means that winters are pleasantly mild, and the summers are hot and dry. When it does rain, its not often for more than an hour or two!

Empty Beaches

Imagine having the most famous beaches of the Algarve almost to yourself. In January, the crowds are gone, and the beauty of places like Praia da Marinha and Praia de Benagil takes on a peaceful, magical quality. The weather is cooler, so no you won’t be sunbathing or swimming (unless you’re brave)yes, but on sunny days exploring the coastline is a must.

Affordable Travel

January is low season in the Algarve, the period after Christmas and New Year will give you some of the cheapest accommodation, flights and car rental. It’s the ideal time for budget travelers or anyone looking for a luxurious stay without the hefty price tag.

Golfing Paradise

For golf enthusiasts, the Algarve in January is a dream. The region is known for its world-class golf courses, and in winter, you’ll find far fewer crowds, more tee times available and lower prices. The cooler temperatures make for a comfortable round of golf surrounded by stunning scenery. Just watch the daylight hours though!

Authentic Experiences

With fewer tourists around, January is the perfect time to experience the local culture in the Algarve. The towns of Faro, Albufeira, and Lagos are more relaxed, allowing for authentic interactions with locals. It’s a time to savour the slower pace of life and enjoy the region’s culinary delights without the rush.

Nature and Hiking

For nature lovers, the Ria Formosa Natural Park and the cliffs of Cape St. Vincent are serene and beautiful in the winter light. Hiking along the coastal paths offers breathtaking views without the summer heat.

Festivals and Events in the Algarve in January

Even in the off-season, the Algarve has a lively cultural scene. January often features local festivals, celebrating everything from traditional music to winter foods. It’s a great opportunity to see how the local festivities happen without the crush of tourists. The small village of Querança, in Loulé Municipality holds Festa das Chouriças, yup a festival of traditional Portuguese sausages!

Another annual event held by Loulé council, is the unveiling of what’s claimed to be Portugal’s largest Bolo Rei. The giant Christmas cake that usually measures around 150m is presented and served to the public on the 6th January each year. A unique annual tradition that’s often reserved just for locals!
