Having spent over five years exploring Portugal, each month adds a distinctive touch to the experience. April in the Algarve is a perfect example. With its generally pleasant weather, cultural scene, and blossoming nature. Here’s 9 of my favourite reasons you should consider the Algarve for your April getaway!
Spring Weather Perfection
April sees the Algarve basking in spring’s warmth, with temperatures typically around 18-22°C (64-72°F) and boasting 8 hours of daily sunshine. It’s the perfect weather for outdoor activities like hiking or just lounging at beach cafes, with the added beauty of spring blossoms. That said, the weather can be varied, it can rain for brief periods, and you’ll often get a bit of wind. It’s a good idea to pack layers!
Lower Costs Before Peak Season
April is still the lower season in the Algarve, I’ll be hesitant to use the word ‘shoulder’ or ‘low’ season outside of winter, as during Easter you’ll see a large increase in visitors. However, prices are still far from the summer costs. So you can enjoy lower prices on accommodation, flights, and car rentals compared to the summer. April is ideal for those seeking a balance between budget-friendly travel and enjoying the Algarve’s beauty without the peak season crowds.
Flowers and Trees in Bloom
April is when spring really arrives. Following the rains, the longer days of sunshine seem to wake up all flowers and trees in the region. Not just in the countryside, but in the towns and cities too. The Jacaranda trees that many towns have growing, bloom into vibrant shades of Purple, while almond also typically flowers in late March and into April. The region is awash with vibrant hues, providing perfect opportunities for nature walks and photography. The coastal cliffs and inland areas are particularly picturesque during this time.
Easter Celebrations
Easter in the Algarve is a special time. Traditional processions and festivities take place, offering a unique glimpse into the region’s rich cultural heritage. Local towns Loulé, Tavira and Faro host impressive religious ceremonies, processions, and celebrations. That’s before we mention the food and typical feasts you’ll find.
Uncrowded Beaches
While the weather is warming up, the beaches in April remain relatively uncrowded. It’s a wonderful time to enjoy iconic spots like Praia da Marinha and Praia de Benagil in peace, experiencing their natural beauty without them packed out with the summer tourists. Photographers will also enjoy this season, the weathers clear enough for great sun rises and sunsets, and the beaches aren’t yet filled with beach chairs, sun loungers, and parasols!
Golfing in Ideal Conditions
The Algarve’s golf courses are in full swing in April. The longer days of sunshine, pleasant weather and reduced tourist numbers, mean golf enthusiasts can enjoy some of Europe’s best courses in ideal conditions. Usually at better rates than in the high season too!
Bird Watching Paradise
Spring brings an influx of migratory birds to the Algarve, adding to its rich bird-watching tapestry. Nature enthusiasts can observe a diverse range of species in habitats like the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a haven for birdlife.
Authentic Local Experiences
April’s lower tourist presence allows for more authentic interactions with locals. Whether its at bars and restaurants, or in the local coffee shop. During April there’s still an unhurried atmosphere in the towns and cities.
Festivals and Events in the Algarve in April
The Algarve’s event calendar in April is lively and varied here’s a few of our favourite events!
- 10th Spring Exhibition and Celebrations of the 50th Anniversary of April 25th: Tavira. For four days, Tavira celebrates the arrival of spring and the 50th anniversary of the April Revolution with creative workshops, theater, concerts, wine tastings and gastronomic demonstrations. Participate with the whole family, from carnation to chest.
- Walking Festival Ameixial: 26th – 28th April 2024. Loulé. Inspired by similar events in other countries, Walking Festival Ameixial aims to bring friends together for walks, promote regional gems, support the local economy, and raise awareness among communities and organizations about safeguarding heritage and developing environmentally sustainable practicies.
- São Marcos Fair. 25th April 2024. Alcoutim.
- Festival of the Sovereign Mother (Festa da Mãe Soberana). Loulé. The Festival of the Sovereign Mother honors Our Lady of Piety, the patron saint of Loulé, and is one of the largest religious celebrations south of Fátima. Steeped in tradition, the procession to church (“Festa Pequena”) is the high point of this event and is an incomparable affirmation of faith. As men carry a statue of the Virgin Mary on their shoulders, music and a crowd of faithful accompany their every step in an unforgettable scene.
- Festa das Tochas Floridas – São Brás de Alportel. As part of the town’s Easter festivities, the city hosts a procession of flower torches.
