The Algarve in October: 9 Great Reasons to Visit this Autumn

After spending over five years exploring Portugal, I’ve discovered that each month in the Algarve brings its own unique charm. October is no exception. With the summer crowds gone, warm mild weather, and a whole bunch of seasonal activities, October might just be my favourite month here in the Algarve.

Here are nine great reasons why you should consider the Algarve for your October escape!

1. Mild Autumn Weather

October in the Algarve usually gets incredibly mild and pleasant weather, with temperatures ranging from 20-24°C (68-75°F) and about 7-8 hours of sunshine daily. Which often feels like summer temperatures if you’re coming from Northern Europe.

While the evenings can start to feel a bit cooler, it’s still warm enough for outdoor activities like hiking, sightseeing, or even lounging on the beach. If you’re used to cool seas, the sea even remains comfortable for swimming, with water temperatures around 20°C (68°F). The temperatures make it a perfect month for those who prefer to avoid the summer heat.

2. Peaceful Beaches

By October, the Algarve’s beaches have settled down, offering a much more peaceful experience. Officially the bathing season is over, yet in popular spots you might still find lifeguards.

The now insta famous spots like Praia da Falésia and Praia Dona Ana are far less crowded, giving you plenty of space to enjoy this stunning coastline. Whether you’re looking to sunbathe, take a leisurely swim, or explore hidden coves, October is an ideal time to enjoy the Algarve’s beaches without the hustle and bustle of peak season.

3. Autumn Hiking and Nature Walks

The Algarve’s natural beauty really does shine in October, with cooler temperatures making it perfect for hiking and taking long walks. The region’s best trails, such as the Rota Vicentina, Via Algarviana, or the Seven Hanging Valleys offer breathtaking views of the landscape, from stunning coastlines and cliffs, to rolling hills and inland forests.

October is also a great time to explore the region’s parks and reserves, like the Ria Formosa Natural Park, where you can spot migrating birds and other wildlife. Typically, the flamingos return to the Algarve in late September to early October, which is always a welcome surprise to visitors.

4. Harvest Season Delights

October continues the harvest season in the Algarve, with markets filled with fresh, seasonal produce. Local fruits like pomegranates, persimmons, and late-season grapes are in abundance. It’s a great time to indulge in the Algarve’s culinary offerings, from traditional dishes to farm-to-table experiences.

The region’s vineyards are also in full swing, offering wine tastings and tours that showcase the local wine heritage. Wineries, like Morgado do Quintão host harvest parties celebrating the wine harvesting season.

5. Olive Harvesting Experience

October also marks the beginning of the olive harvesting season in the Algarve – although it can actually start anywhere between the mid October to November. During October in the Algarve, you can participate in olive-picking activities, visit local olive mills, and learn about the traditional methods of olive oil production. It’s a fascinating insight into another traditional facet of Algarvean life.

6. Golfing in Ideal Conditions

For golf enthusiasts, October is an excellent time to visit the Algarve. The weather is perfect for a round of golf, with mild temperatures and less crowded courses. The Algarve is home to some of Europe’s best golf courses, and in October, you can enjoy them at a leisurely pace. The courses are lush and well-maintained, providing ideal conditions for both beginners and seasoned golfers alike. Typically, the prices of accommodation, and travel are much cheaper than the peak season too!

7. Lively Festivals and Events

October is a month filled with cultural events and festivals in the Algarve. From music and arts festivals to local fairs and feiras, there’s always something happening somewhere.

Feira de Santa Iria is perhaps the biggest and most famous. It lasts for around 10 days each October, and in 2024 will kick off on the 17th. Originally starting over 500 years ago to honour Saint Iria, it’s now a packed 10-day event celebrating the city of Faro, with fair rides, local food, arts and crafts, and music. You won’t just find events in the capital city, but all over the Algarve in October. Another personal favourite of mine is the Loulé International Jazz Festival, a 3 day event with performances by jazz artists from around the world.

8. Unbeatable Value

With the summer crowds gone, October offers excellent value for money in the Algarve. Accommodation prices are lower, and you can find great deals on flights and car rentals. It’s sometimes possible to get cheaper tickets to attractions, and even tour guides will sometimes be cheaper.

9. Slower Pace

Overall, the cities, towns, and beaches are much less busy. A slower pace of life returns to the Algarve. Restaurants, bars and attractions are less busy too. Allowing for a more relaxed and enjoyable experience across the region. October is a great time for slow travellers and people that want to explore in a less hurried way.
