When people think about the Algarve, they’ll usually imagine the ultimate summer destination. The stunning coastline, days at the beach, boat trips, cold jugs of sangria on shady terraces. March in the Algarve, is definitely not a traditional month to consider. However, in March, spring arrives and the region begins to awaken, almost preparing for Easter and the coming summer months. Here’s 7 reasons why you should consider visiting the Algarve in March!
Spring’s Arrival in the Algarve
March in the Algarve is synonymous with the arrival of spring. The countryside bursts into life with colorful wildflowers, almond blossoms, and orange trees flowering. It’s the perfect time to explore many of the nature trails and countryside hikes the region offers.
Perfect Weather for Outdoor Activities
With temperatures warming up, March is ideal for exploring the great outdoors. Whether it’s hiking along the stunning cliffs of Ponta da Piedade, cycling through the rolling hills, or simply strolling through charming old towns like Faro and Tavira. The Algarve in March usually experiences temperatures, around 16-19°C (60-65°F). Bright sunny days can feel very warm.
Affordable Travel Options
March is still the traditional low season and offers the benefit of more affordable travel options. Accommodation, flights and car rental are all much lower in price, giving you more budget to explore and enjoy the region.
Fewer Tourists, More Authenticity
Like the preceding winter months, March is still the low season and sees far fewer tourists. You can experience the Algarve’s hot spots and local places at entirely your own pace. The local markets, cafes, pastelarias and traditional restaurants offer a more genuine and intimate Portuguese experience. There’s also the element of freedom and flexibility, you don’t need to book restaurants and tours months or weeks in advance.
Beaches in Their Natural Beauty
The Algarve’s most famous beaches, such as Praia da Dona Ana and Praia da Marinha, are still very much uncrowded in March. You can enjoy these stunning beaches, and almost the entire Algarve coastline in peace – a stark contrast to the bustling summer months. You’ll find the odd dog walker, and brave winter swimmer, but the beaches are uncrowded.
The beach bars are often shuttered, and the concessions won’t arrive until beach season starts in April, so now’s the time to fully explore the coastline.
Seafood and Gastronomy
March is a fantastic time for food lovers in the Algarve. The Algarve’s coastal towns offer fresh, delicious seafood that’s a staple of Portuguese cuisine. Head inland, and you’ll discover a completely different type of Portuguese cuisine, where cheeses, smoked and preserved meats reign supreme. During March, you’ll also find a whole host of festivals dedicated to Algarve cuisine that usually only the locals know about!
